The Tuesday Knee Jerk Reaction: AFL Round Eight

Footy is a passion, not some cold hearted, spread sheet dominated rational exercise.

On a Monday you want irrational reaction. You want emotion to trump reason.

What you really want is idiotic hysteria.

You've come to the right place.

Sydney (107) vs Hawthorn (88)

Isn't ANZ Stadium a great place to hold a blockbuster game? The surface looked like an agricultural fair had been held there the night before.

Followed by some circle work.

Another bonus was how the stadium was far too big for the minuscule crowd that made the six-day trek there, taking away any atmosphere.

The Hawks really suffered from so many of their stars being out. Either due to injury or the fact they now play for Sydney.

They say into ever season a little rain must fall. Well, Hawthorn just got a monsoon with almost all their best players out injured, some for the foreseeable future.

I’ve always said they can win the Premiership but at the first sign of trouble, I’m ditching them entirely, until I jump back on them later in the season.

As for Sydney, they finally played the best forward line money can buy and they looked pretty good.

Of course Buddy kicked so poorly, it made me wonder if he has issues with spatial awareness. It would explain the driving.

What to make of the Swans? It was a good win and they are improving however Hawthorn was undermanned.

That said, Tippet looked very good and if Buddy had kicked straight this would have been an absolute blow out.

Much like the Collingwood coaching change, it’s going to be very annoying if this most expensive forward line ever comes off.

Port Adelaide (94) vs Fremantle (76)

This was a great game. A back and forth tussle until Port just ran out the game.

Port run out games like Ben Cousins runs from police.

What's not to like about the Power, except the fact its Port Adelaide? I'm calling it now, they're this year Premiers.

Ross Lyon said his team is a 'mediocre' team at the moment and I couldn't agree more.

Fremantle look like a team that is just not gelling. We all think they're going to come good but that's what happens when a team declines.

You keep expecting them to be good based on past performance long past the point where it becomes obvious they're just not that good. It's like ageing.

Brisbane (57) vs Essendon (65)

So how bad are Essendon? They're pretty bad. All this talk on where Hurley and Carlise should play, is a bit like shifting deck chairs on the Titanic.

Bomber Thompson's laid back approach seems to be rubbing off on the players.

Brisbane are really bad too but they do try. At numerous points they looked like snatching a victory here.

It's quite amazing how far and fast this club has fallen.

The Gabba looked empty, which gave the fact the Lions wore the Brisbane Bears jumper some really authenticity.

Melbourne (83) vs Western Bulldogs (99)

Melbourne are definitely improving. All night they kept coming but just couldn't get over the final hurdle.

Dom Tyson (Tom Dyson as a fan sitting in front of me kept calling him) backed up his magnificent hair with a great performance and shows he was worth trading for considering Christian Salem who they also got shows enormous promise.

Demon fans seemed perplexed at the end of the game. A loss but a close one. Not what they're used to.

I'm not sure what to make of the Bulldogs. A lot of the polish that got them across the line came from their experienced players like Cooney.

Are the young kids developing fast enough to step up in time for when the veterans exit? I'm a bit suspicious this is not happening fast enough.

West Coast (188) vs Greater Western Sydney (77)

What a wonderful Mother's Day game this was.

The AFL scheduling department seem to be actively going out of their way to lose momentum across the season and annoy fans.

This game was on at 4.40 pm in the Eastern States and the only game for the whole day.

West Coast look amazing, which is fine but the Giants looked like they were a TAC Cup side.

Granted GWS had some big outs but they should really be further along than were they are given the help they’ve gotten.

St Kilda (69) v Carlton (101)

Another scheduling masterpiece. Who love’s Monday Night Football on Foxtel? Foxtel.

St Kilda are so bad they made Carlton look amazing. This is not an easy thing to do.

The reality of the Saints position is starting to sink in after three good wins to start the season.

St Kilda fans must feel an awful sense that the Ross Lyon years were just a brief pleasant dream.

The internet would have melted down if Carlton had lost this one. It would have been worth it for Malthouse’s media conference alone.

The pleasing thing is that when there are no passengers, he doesn't have anyone to throw under the bus. Hey, that metaphor almost works.

Carlton’s next game after their bye is against Adelaide at the MCG. That’s almost winnable. Perhaps.

The good news for us all, is that there are only two more bye weeks to go.
