Sporting Questions Answered: AFL Mullets, Tania Hird and Eddie McGuire

After last week’s Sporting Questions Answered the inbox filled up pretty quickly. I’ve got to say, I get some pretty imaginative questions.

If you want to submit one of your own you can do so here.

Easy Decision

My wife and I are expecting our first child the same day my footy team (West Coast) are in town to play Melbourne (likely win). I haven't broken the news to her yet that I may potentially miss the delivery to catch the footy. What advice would you give for handling the scenario? -Mark

Firstly, damn you for accurately penciling in a game against Melbourne as a win.

Your question is one as old as time itself, why are there no delivery suites at sporting stadiums?

After all, the AFL’s audience is 50 per cent women and the AFL also acknowledge that with a token Women’s round each year.

It’s deeply unfair that couples have to miss a game just because they have an inconvenient, greatest moment of their lives thing on. Watching your team play could distract or add to the pain of childbirth.

Given the AFL have been criminally slack on this issue, you’re going to have to go without your wife.

If she’s anything like the women I know, she’ll completely understand and even encourage you (Full disclosure: Women are a mystery to me and avoid me like the plague).

Winter Olympics

When's New Zealand going to waste $50b on the Winter Olympics so it's in our time zone and I can not watch it while I’m at work? –Robe

This is an excellent point. I’m sick of having to ignore the Winter Olympics in another time zone.

The problem is New Zealand don’t have $50, let alone $50 billion, so I don’t see it happening anytime soon.

The real mistake Russia have made with these Olympics is scheduling them to go head to head with the NAB Challenge. I haven’t seen ratings suicide like that since Channel Nine put ‘not even remotely innocent Schapelle’ up against INXS.

Eddie McGuire

We all know Eddie McGuire loves to threaten to sue people, so how many people does Eddie have to threaten to sue before he actually has to sue somebody? Harps

When Eddie threatened to sue Hobart wicketkeeper Tim Paine, it marked the moment that more people have been threatened to be sued by Eddie than have not.

Of course Eddie knows suing people is both time consuming and expensive.

He’s well aware that with his members clogging the Victorian court system, it would take years or decades to actually sue someone.

Glory Days

With regards to AFL footy, what era do you regard as the good old days? Was it the 50s and 60s when we could all win flags? Darren

It’s common knowledge to all AFL fans that football has been in the dark ages since 1964.

By far the 1940s and 50s were the greatest era for football. Melbourne won Premierships in 1940, 1941, 1948, 1955, 1956, 1957 and 1959.

Since then there have been too many Premierships by Essendon, Hawthorn, Carlton and even clubs from outside Victoria. Terrible stuff old chap.

Tania Hird

Do you agree that Demetriou should get the punt so Tania Hird can be parachuted in to the top spot? If so, what do you believe her first reforms will be? Darryl

I’d not thought of this particular move but it makes so much sense know that you suggest it.

While it’s never mentioned in the media, did you know Tania’s a lawyer in her own right?

She can also manipulate the media with ease. Her ‘unscheduled’ interview with the Herald Sun was a masterstroke.

It’s hard to know what her first reform would be but I’m imagining it will be ensuring you can’t get paid while you’re suspended by having the payment occur the year before.

AFL Mullets and Super 15

In your opinion, is Tex Walker's mullet or Gary Ayres' mullet better? and how long until the afl buys out the australian super 15's teams so the scoreboard section of victorian papers can be cleared of irrelevant news? – Johnny

Two excellent, though slightly unrelated questions.

I have to say, looking back at the photos, Gary Ayers’ mullet is a thing of pure beauty. This photo encapsulates everything that makes footy great.

Tex’s is great but it’s stands on the shoulders of giants like Gary and just quietly, this guy here.
