Nathan Buckley’s Diary: The day I was called a coward

Dear Diary

It’s been a while since I picked up the old fountain pen and shared my deepest thoughts. I guess the pain of not winning the Premiership has been too much to bare.

But it’s 3am and I’ve just finished my morning run. I’ve got 30 minutes to kill before I hit the gym.

It’s been a difficult few months diary. Not so much for me but for the players I’ve delisted.

While I don’t allow myself to ‘feel’ things, I can imagine it’s been a difficult time for those players.

Personally, I always avoided being delisted by being amazing at football. It’s a constant source of surprise to me that others don’t try the same approach.

Letting players go is never easy. That’s what Rodney Eade told me.

Personally, I found it very easy. I think I was justified letting Didak and Jolly go for example, no other team picked them up.

Weirdly though, that logic means it was a mistake to let Cameron Wood go. That said, Mick is mad.

Yesterday however diary, was a day I thought I’d never see. Darren Jolly called me a ‘coward’.

The worst part was he did it through the media. Through those soft-handed, pale skinned drunkards.

No one calls me a coward.

Well, Tania did once when I didn’t come home for three days after forgetting to tape Say Yes to the Dress.

Darren claims I didn’t like it when he gave his views on how I should be coaching.

I seem to remember most of those times were him saying, ‘you really should be starting Darren Jolly in the ruck.’

I played it cool in the media of course. How can people who make their money writing and talking understand the warrior culture?

Deep down though, I’m disappointed that the weakness in Darren’s knees has now spread to his character.

I wish he understood that I’d have loved him to be able to keep playing AFL. Even if it was just to limit the amount of columns he’d be able to write.

Anyway, I’d better go. Alan Didak’s been sleeping in his car outside my house and I want to get to the gym while he’s still asleep.

Nathan
