Monday Morning Knee Jerk Reaction AFL Round Two

Footy is a passion, not some cold hearted, spread sheet dominated rational exercise.

On a Monday morning you want irrational reaction. You want emotion to trump reason.

What you really want is idiotic hysteria.

You've come to the right place.

Richmond v Carlton

The Mick Malthouse experiment has failed. It's time to move on immediately.

Carlton should hire an up and coming young assistant coach who knows the modern game. Brett Ratten at Hawthorn is a name that comes to mind.

Bryce Gibbs has said he wants to know more about the club's direction before re-signing. Based on his performance this week, if he stays, the answer is down.

As for Richmond, despite the win, it's obvious the Damian Hardwick experiment has failed.

If the Blues had kicked straight, we'd be talking about a team the chokes more than Greg Norman.

Essendon v Hawthorn

The sad part about this for Bombers fans, is they would have won this if Hird was coaching.

It's obvious, inexperienced coach Mark Thompson is not up to senior coaching and lacks the experience to win the big games. He just doesn’t have the coaching CV Hird has.

Hird arguably has the best AFL mind in all of Singapore where he's currently studying. There is a guy, who used to coach in the Eastern Football League, who is backpacking there at the moment who goes close though.

As for Hawthorn, they are obviously Premiers this season. We just need to get through the season and finals before we can trigger the formalities.

Nick Riewoldt v Greater Western Sydney

Of all the AFL teams, Nick Riewoldt has probably exceeded everyone's expectations so far.

All though they've faced an easy draw, before the season they were no sure things against Melbourne and the Giants.

The real test will come over the next few weeks as Nick Riewoldt plays some of the top sides.

The Giants however should have won this and it's worrying they didn't. It may be time to trade players like Jeremy Cameron if they can't get the job done.

Port Adelaide v Adelaide

The city of Rundle Mall came alive this weekend with the Showdown. Held at the new, cleverly named Adelaide Oval, the team representing the poor people of South Australia won convincingly.

Ken Hinkley is the greatest coach who ever lived. Even his assistant coaches are in awe/fear of him.

The Power would have to be Premiership favourites if you want my ill-informed opinion.

The Crows however are in a 'world of pain' to borrow a phrase. They should seriously consider going back to signing secret deals. Their CEO is an expert.

Fremantle v Gold Coast

Ross Lyon's team got back to its dull, lifeless roots this weekend. He is ruining football and it will never recover.

They'll probably win the Premiership though.

As for the Gold Coast they were really disappointing. They've been given every advantage and when you consider how well teams like Melbourne have done with early draft picks, the Suns have no excuse.

Gary Ablett is obviously passed it.

Sydney v Collingwood

The Sydney Swans are finished. They'll be the Canberra Swans in five years.

While I lack firsthand knowledge or 'facts', Buddy has destroyed the club.

They need to get Paul Roos back as John Longmire has done nothing with them since he left.

Nathan Buckley is the AFL's greatest living coach. Despite a patchwork team in the cauldron that is ANZ Stadium, Bucks steered his team to a famous victory.

You can call it now, Scott Pendlebury will win the Brownlow this year.

Brisbane v Geelong

A scrappy affair, Geelong showed why they are Premiership favourites with a win even though they played poorly.

Joel Selwood has been a real find by the Cats this year and could have a big future, while losing James Podsiadly has helped the team immensely.

Justin Leppitsch can take real pride that his team doesn’t such anywhere near as much as people predicted.

Melbourne v West Coast

The Melbourne Football Club gave up being an AFL club a long time ago. Now they are a bad team with a good coach.

Paul Roos says he was shocked at the skill errors his team made. Demons supporters however weren’t. Players not being able to do things like catch a football, kick ,handball or break out of a light jog have been hallmarks of the team for years.

The Dees’ players showed Roos that when it comes to giving up, they are the best in the business.

The Eagles however are yet to play an AFL team this season, so it’s hard to judge how good they are.

You could have one of the international AFL teams filled with ex-pats and backpackers, play the Bulldogs or Melbourne and they’d look good.

Western Bulldogs v North Melbourne

The AFL has been rightly criticised for its terrible scheduling but burying this one on a Sunday evening on Foxtel was a good move.

Watching this made me wish I’d grown up and still lived in a country that had never heard of AFL football.

The Bulldogs are so bad they would be unbackable for the wooden spoon except for the existence of Melbourne.

Giving Brendan McCartney a contract extension last year, makes sense. You have to lock a guy like that in or he’ll definitely be poached by a team in the Amateurs.

The idea that North are top four material is more fanciful than the idea that Brad is the better Scott brother.

North not only played to the level of their inferior opponent, at times they look like they were challenging them in a race to the bottom.
