The Monday Knee Jerk Reaction: AFL Round Ten

Footy is a passion, not some cold hearted, spread sheet dominated rational exercise.

On a Monday you want irrational reaction. You want emotion to trump reason.

What you really want is idiotic hysteria.

You've come to the right place.

Geelong (111) v North Melbourne (91)

Friday night lights for the first time in Geelong and rather than scaring the local townsfolk (my prediction), they turned out in droves.

This win really proved to me that Geelong can beat North Melbourne.

Remember at the start of the season when people talked about North being top four? Those people seem to have gone a bit quiet.

Sometimes, I feel the AFL is just an elaborate way of the universe reinforcing Brad Scott's inferiority complex.

Greater Western Sydney (41) v Richmond (154)

The Giants are actually lowering land values in Western Sydney. Something I never thought possible.

The NRL now see GWS as part of their marketing plan, turning people off AFL while costing League nothing.

What about those Tigers and Jack Roewoldt? Play them against a non-AFL team and they are a class above.

It just shows you there is a big drop between a bottom placed AFL team and a mid-level NEAFL side.

Collingwood (109) v West Coast (101)

Nick Maxwell played out a fantasy of many of ours on Saturday. No, not leading his team to victory in a close one but whacking and yelling at Alex Fasolo.

What I don't understand is that when I yell at a co-worker, people don't applaud my leadership but offer me counselling and a final warning.

I wish work was more like the AFL and you could shove and scream at Janice when she doesn't understand how to use the share drive for the fortieth time.

The Eagles of Western Coast are only OK.

Sure, they really took it to Collingwood but Collingwood lost to Adelaide who then lost to Carlton.

Of course, giving Nic Naitanui lots of money for the next five years should solve all their problems.

Port Adelaide (100) v Hawthorn (86)

How amazing and loud is Adelaide Oval? The Channel Seven commentary team certainly wanted us to know the answer to this, if mentioning it every four seconds is anything to go by.

Now I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Ken Hinkley is the greatest man alive. No rebuilds for Ken, just a tilt at the Premiership as soon as possible.

With all their injuries, we’d all feel sorry for Hawthorn if they weren't Hawthorn.

That said, Hawthorn were pretty good considering their outs. I’m looking forward to a rematch in the Finals.

Gold Coast (119) v Western Bulldogs (74)

The first of two Sunday games, so what do the AFL do? Schedule them both to overlap so you can’t watch both.

Clever to compete against yourself and minimise the amount of time people can watch your game.

Those mean Bulldogs picking on Gary Ablett! You know you’re a pretty amazing player if a bad game is 24 possessions.

The good expansion team, seem set for a top four finish, proving that if you’re handed all the best young players you can make it work. GWS take note.

Personally, comparing the expansion team’s top recruits, Gary Ablett just edges out Tom Scully for me. So close though.

The Bulldogs are a frustrating team. Right up there with traffic on the West Gate Bridge for their fans.

Apparently they’re rebuilding but progress seems very slow.

Carlton (81) v Adelaide (76)

Remember when Carlton kept losing? Those were the good old days.

Next week they play Brisbane, meaning Mick may have his boys heading for ninth, which is Finals for them.

That said, this was a terrible game masked only by the close score.

Of course Eddie Betts had returned to the MCG to play his former side and must have been truly daunted by the 32,000 crowd that showed up.

Adelaide have some worrying signs. For example, James Podsiadly playing in defence.

Thankfully, this was the last game in the three-week bye round hell we've been stuck in.

Finally, it’s over and we can enjoy the AFL poor scheduling in more traditional forms.

Please kindly include a venting blog for post game remarks of quality.

Meaning, contributors must first qualify as 'original' 'clever' 'provocative' [but just short of a declaration of war] types whose remarks are short, sharp and shinny.

Qualification implies that "Titus O'Riely" has issued an approval and those remarks may/may not be published by Titus

Perhaps a blog open for 2hours only 'post match' so as to capture the absolute beauty of the moment

PS: Oh please make a remark at some stage about the startled rabbit facial expressions of WCE Coach Simpson, somewhat akin to Homer at times!

PS: Please consider if you will about post match remarks of team managers 'what we learnt from the game' and somehow an O'Riely review of how such reporting delivered on its promises! Again for example WCE - Homer Simpson' - how those master plans played out the following week
