The Gold Coast Suns today announced they had finally got around to sacking Guy McKenna.
Chairman of the Gold Coast Suns John Witheriff said he’d been meaning to do it for weeks, but stuff kept coming up.
“I had a few social functions on and I’ve been binge watching ‘Orange is the New Black,’ so there hasn’t been a lot of time,” Mr Witheriff said.
“I’d told a lot of other people, but I just wasn’t able to find the time to tell Guy himself. A part of me hoped that one day I’d come in and he’d just be gone.
“Anyway, it’s all done now. It always feels good to finally get around to something you’ve been putting off.”
The Gold Coast Board said an extensive review of football operations by Marcus Ashcroft, consisted of a twenty minute coffee with Gary Ablett.
“Of course, I didn’t tell Gary about McKenna going or that we were looking at Mark Thompson. Can you imagine that! So awkward,” said Mr Ashcroft.
“Gary moved to Queensland to get away from that guy and we want to hire him.”
Mr Witheriff said he did feel ‘a bit bad’ that everyone knew of McKenna’s sacking before he did.
“Look, have we handled this well? No. I felt bad every time I saw it on Twitter or in the paper and I’d think, John, you really need to get onto that.”
“But if we get Mark Thompson, who will care? Not me.”
“Gee, I hope Bomber agrees to come. That would be embarrassing if he didn’t. Do you think he’ll come? Have I made a terrible mistake? Is that microphone still on? Tell me he’ll say yes.”
Mr Witheriff said he was very much enjoying ‘Orange is the New Black.”

Based on the press conference, I reckon Guy McKenna is a good shot to be named the new GC coach - John Witheriff is obviously a huge fan.

Feel for McKenna. GC have a solid dose of premature expectation.
A marquee coach coming in would have to give the Board a cold shower as to where the list is at and how much they need to improve.
The list is still not physically mature, so they have plenty of upside. If the list has champion quality then the poor season finish should be a catalyst in the way 2006 was for Geelong and 2008 for Collingwood and they should improve significantly for 2015.
If not - GC will need to be as tough with the list as they have been with McKenna.
Even with improvement, no guarantee of a flag - as Ross Lyon could testify.
