Gillon McLachlan Fireside Chat: Fan Behaviour
Hi footy fans
There's been a bit in the media this week about some unfortunate incidents at footy games.
Unfortunately, racism has again reared its ugly head at our games.
This is unacceptable. As a South Australian living in Victoria, I'm no stranger to racism.
We've asked nicely for people to stop with racist comments we've even encouraged people to just not be racist full stop.
The problem is, while the majority of society has moved with the times, there are still idiots amongst us.
Dealing with idiots is hard. By definition, they tend to continually do idiotic things. We all know this. Just look around your workplace.
It's pretty simple to be in the majority here and not be racist. Why not try being a decent person and not an idiot? It will do wonders for your popularity and prospects in the job market.
Society has moved on from judging people on their race, gender, religion or the fact they once wore a mustard jacket to the races and now nobody will shut up about it.
Speaking of idiots, a small group of fans booed an umpire this weekend, after he was knocked unconscious in an accidental clash.
To begin, booing someone while they are unconscious is pointless. They can’t hear you.
That aside, you still shouldn't boo someone when they’re knocked unconscious.
Personally, I’m not precious about booing people at the footy. Getting the stress of the week out is part of the fun.
I used to boo Mike Fitzpatrick every time he walked passed my office, when he took forever to appoint me CEO.
To be fair, I know the majority of people are decent and behave well at the football, even Essendon fans.
So let’s continue to work hard together to make racism and booing unconscious umpires unacceptable because really, should I even be having to say this?
Oh, before I go, would it kill people to show some class ad not bring a 24-year old model to a memorial service in an inappropriate dress?
I’m not singling anyone out here but remember, not everything is about you Geoffrey.
Talk soon
