EXCLUSIVE: Fremantle considering a return to AFL footy next year

The Fremantle Dockers are considering making a surprise return to AFL footy next year, after sitting out the 2016 season.

A source close to Fremantle power brokers revealed the club has missed playing competitive football and was looking into the logistics of returning to the sport.

While the club has played footy at an amateur level this year, it’s currently well off the standard required at AFL level.

“While it’s not a sure thing just yet, there seems to be a shift in thinking that they might give footy a go again next year,” said the source.

“There’s no doubt that there is some enthusiasm to have two AFL sides from Western Australia in the AFL again.”

However, there are doubts that Fremantle can return to competent football next season.

Injury, retirements and Ross Lyon are apparently making administrators at the club skeptical about playing the 2017 season, with 2019 seen as a more realistic date.
