Eddie McGuire interviews Eddie McGuire on Eddie McGuire Tonight

While yet to air, The Flack has gained exclusive access to the transcript of a recently filmed episode of EMT, where the great man, Eddie McGuire, interviewed the great man, Eddie McGuire. Here it is in full.

Host Eddie: Well, we’ve got the interview you’ve been waiting for, Collingwood President and Television Personality Eddie McGuire. Welcome, Eddie.

Guest Eddie: I’m also a successful business man. (laughs).

Host Eddie: (Laughs). Well, I think you’re playing that down a bit, you’re an incredibly successful businessman.

Guest Eddie: Well it’s great to be on EMT, anyway. It’s a great show on Foxtel and it always has the best guests. I know I never miss it and Foxtel is terrific.

Host Eddie: Foxtel do a great job and I’m really looking forward to their coverage of the Olympics this year, which I understand you’ll be covering for Nine and Foxtel.

Guest Eddie: Yes. I can’t wait to drive my terrific Lexus to the airport and get on that wonderful airline, Emirates, and just get over there.

Host Eddie: Ok Eddie, we need to get to the tough questions. After all, you’re not Stephen Kernahan. It’s been a busy year and you’ve had a few stoushes; perhaps the most notable was with Mick Malthouse. Do you regret what happened?

Guest Eddie: I sure do. My door is always open, though, for Mick to apologise. He said a lot of hurtful things and one thing Mick should know is you don’t criticise Collingwood. We can criticise you but not the other way around.

Host Eddie: Well I thought you handled the whole situation with a great deal of class.

Guest Eddie: I don’t know about that. I’m just disappointed that Mick didn’t just accept my decision to move him on gratefully. His reaction was very strange, being upset and all.

Host Eddie: Well since that incident you’ve gone on to praise Mick Malthouse in relation to a potential gig at Carlton. This triggered, can I say a fairly unprofessional response, from very junior journalist Andy Maher. I want to play his comments and then your response.

Maher’s comments:

“(McGuire) is a loser… Eddie McGuire is a loser. Of course he is.”

“If Eddie McGuire thinks Mick Malthouse is such a great coach, why did he sack him? Why did he get rid of him?

“Eddie should not have been sticking his nose where he did yesterday and he was way out of line.”

Eddie’s response:

“The boy (Andy Maher) couldn’t carry my bags so I’m not going to go that hard on him.”

“Come on mate, Andy you’re a good bloke… I’m speaking to Usain Bolt later today after speaking to Asafa Powell today – poor old Andy will be taking phone calls from Con from Craigieburn for the rest of his life.

“I’ve broken more stories than Andy Maher’s broken wind throughout his life.”

Host Eddie: It must have been pretty hurtful, hearing Andy’s comments.

Guest Eddie: It was but you’ll note in my response I said Andy was a good bloke. I think I rose above it. It’s important not to have a disproportionate response. Those comments of mine came from Triple M’sHot Breakfast with Eddie McGuire, 6-9 weekdays.

Host Eddie: Never miss it.Well if we could move on to the Travis Cloke situation, is Travis being disloyal to you and all the Collingwood fans? It seems he is.

Guest Eddie: Oh no, of course not. Travis is a great guy and more importantly his dad is a great person and I’m sure we can come to an agreement.

Host Eddie: But you’ve given this kid everything and you want him to stay. What’s his problem?

Guest Eddie: Look, this is just one of those things in business. I’m sure this will all work out. You can’t get upset at the fact that football is just a business.

Host Eddie: You’ve come out pretty strongly about some other clubs – mainly Fremantle – who have expressed an interest in Cloke. Here’s a short clip

“Go ask Jack Anthony, he’s disappeared like an Australian Idol third-place getter since leaving Collingwood,”

”They were audacious in the way they picked up Ross Lyon late last year and good luck to them. We have no issue with Fremantle whatsoever. However, if you did pick up yourFooty Record today do what I’ll be doing and that is going to their list and looking at the 22-23-year-olds that you like and submit them to me after the game.”

“Because if we lose Cloke, I will have a war chest and will declare war on the world.”

“And first port of call will be Fremantle, don’t worry about that. You think I’m joking, don’t you? I’m not joking, I promise you.”

Host Eddie: Do you think you came out a bit hard on Fremantle when you listen back to those comments?

Guest Eddie: Not at all. My job is to make Collingwood the most successful club in Australia. Trying to poach one of our players is wrong. Football isn’t just a business.

Host Eddie: Perhaps we could move on to another incident earlier this year, the Melbourne Football Club’s anger at you interviewing Liam Jurrah. Was this a conflict of interest?

Guest Eddie: I’ll say what I said at the time,I don’t care if there is a conflict or not in this situation. The point is this – I’ve been a president and a journalist for 12 years now. Wake up and smell the roses.

Host Eddie: So you don’t believe your many roles cause conflicts of interest?

Guest Eddie: (Going slightly red with anger) That’s a bit rich coming from you mate.

Host Eddie: I’ve got to ask the tough questions or I wouldn’t be a very good journalist.

Guest Eddie: Fair enough. It is true; you are a very good journalist.

Host Eddie: We’re almost out of time but earlier this year the Herald Sun ran a piece by Michael Warner stating you would be the best successor to Andrew Demetriou as AFL Chief. What was you reaction?

Guest Eddie: I don’t think anyone takes that talk seriously.

Host Eddie: They do. I personally think you’d be amazing in the role.

Guest Eddie: You may say that; I couldn’t possibly comment.

Host Eddie: Thanks for your time, Ed.

Guest Eddie: It’s been a pleasure.
