AFL

Buddy Franklin writes a ‘Letter from Sydney’

With the turning of the seasons, my embryonic experience of Sydney continues to grow.

As a former long time resident of Melbourne, the contrasts between these two old metropolitan rivals often jars my everyday experiences in delightful and surprising ways.

Just this week, I learnt the difficulties of learning to drive on the right hand side of the road, as they do here in Sydney.

What often strikes me about the contrasts between Melbourne and Sydney, is not the historically driven cultural differences, such as the overhyped legacy of the "Rum Corps" but the effect of the physical environment.

This thought occurred to me, when I realised that the harbour and beachside suburbs mean you are much more likely to see women in bikinis in Sydney.

The Swans have really helped me to settle in here. I’m very lucky to have the ‘transition to retirement’ plan they’ve provided me with.

Being able to play a little bit of footy, while experiencing the nightlife of this vibrant city, makes me feel blessed.

At the club, I’ve found myself on a similar wavelength to many of the younger guys. I guess that’s just being new to the club and the fact I see them out at night.

Some of the veteran players are a bit harder to understand. Adam Goodes keeps mentioning his ‘Australian of the Year’ work.

To be honest it gets a little tiring.

Perhaps Adam hasn’t noticed that I’m hardly a stranger to national awards. I’m a four-time All-Australian and my girlfriend was Miss Universe Australia.

The funny thing is that in Melbourne they may be impressed with being ‘Australian of the Year’ and ‘championing social issues’ but up here, dating a former Miss Universe Australia is what matters.

So as autumn turns to winter, my focus is on immersing myself in this truly international city. It’s hidden charms, world-class nightclubs and vibrant media.

Till next time
