The apology Brian Taylor should have given

Dear Football fans and wider community

During the pre-game segment, I said something that was both offensive and also, not particularly funny or clever.

I know what you’re thinking, ‘Sounds like a normal Saturday night for you Brian.’

Unfortunately, this was a step too far, even for me, except of course when I did it on radio a few weeks ago, when I told a colleague ‘he looks gay.’

So what did I say? I referred to Harry Taylor as a ‘big poofter.’

Now a bad apology would be to apologise mainly to Harry Taylor, his family and friends.

That would be just making things worse. It would be continuing the idea that being gay is something to be ashamed of, an insult that a person should be offended by.

But this is 2014! We all know that’s not true.

We accept people for who they are and judge them by the quality of their individual character.

Like how everyone’s accepted me for being a cringe worthy footy commentator who repeats inane catchphrases incessantly like ‘woowee’ and ‘foot candy.’

If there’s a group who we should persecute it should be annoying commentators, right?

I mean, calls for me to be sacked should be made on the basis that I’m also ruining most people’s enjoyment of the footy as well as reflecting out-of-date-values.

So really, this apology is aimed at the vast majority of the community who live in the modern world, who are offended by the marginalisation of any group based on their sexuality.

I understand what I said wasn’t just a joke, my comment fosters a culture that has led to immeasurable harm and needs to be wiped from the Earth.

You truly deserve better than what I’ve served up twice now.

Brian Taylor
