The recent sacking of VFL player Josh Bootsma, has again highlighted the dangers inherent in social media for the AFL community.
To assist those operating in an official capacity within the AFL industry, these handy guidelines have been developed.
Overarching Advice:
Don’t be on social media. It is the devil’s work and the playground of idiots and pedants.
Advice if you choose to ignore the overarching advice because you live in the 21st century:
- Don’t post when drunk. Wait till you’re sober, and then still don’t do it.
- Try to avoid posting naked photos unless it’s to your doctor and even then, we wouldn't. We’re pretty sure doctors don’t ask you to send naked pics over Snapchat, at least professionally. Although who knows with all this e-health stuff people talk about? Anyway, we’re getting off track.
- Don’t post racist, sexist or any sort of hateful comments. This is just common sense really. Just be cool and not one of those hateful people that everyone hates.
- Never post your movements on social media as burglars can then target you. Jonathan Brown once accidentally let people know he wasn't at home but criminals were so scared of him they actually went around to make sure no one robbed it. Apparently they did a thorough spring clean for him too and left fresh flowers.
- Remember, people on social media are not always who they say they are. A guy in our marketing team was very disappointed when he discovered Miranda Kerr was not interested in him but was actually a 67 year-old man named Gavin from Endeavour Hills.
- Don’t post things like: “Can’t decide whether to get paid a heap of money at GWS or the Swans. Just kidding, Swans.”.
- Never post images of you taking drugs, don’t do ASADA’s job for them
- Never post anything that negatively portrays the AFL, for example, Brian Taylor
We hope this all helps and remember, you are a role model to people often double your age. How weird is that?
